COURSE DESIGN

What is Course Design and Development?

Over the years, programme and course design have been major components of the faculty development offerings at the CETL. The programme is the overall group of courses that constitute the degree or the credential to be earned from the institution. The course is the individual arranged manageable content to be learned for a defined period of time (usually 13-17 weeks in a semester) from a particular disciplinary area.

Programme and course design is the process an instructor/university teacher must go through at the start of any programme of study or a single course to plan for successful student outcome. If you, as the instructor of the course, wants your course to be effective, there are some questions that you must ask before you even think about objectives, activities, assessments, and constructing a course syllabus. You need to determine your governing values (basically your teaching philosophy statement). You need to ask the question "who are my students?" Also, you will want to think about the situational factors affecting the teaching of the course. Further, think about the situational factors affecting the teaching of the course. Further, think about the overarching goal(s) that you have for your students. What do you want your students to understand, and what are the essential questions that your students should be able to answer by the end of the course (fink, 2005; Wiggins & McTighe, 2005). After you have answered these questions, then you can articulate your learning objectives, determine potentia assessments, and then decide what instructional strategies and activities (learning activities) you will do with the students to help them meet the objectives. The next step can then be to plan your course content and construct your course schedule and syllabus.
