Podcasting

5) PODCASTING

What is it?

In educational contexts, podcasting is the process of preparing and sharing audio content to students, facilitators and other interested parties. Podcasting in education facilitates differentiation and supports universal design principles. Another flexible characteristic of podcasts is that they can be used with any subject area and at any level of the educational hierarchy.

Tips (best practice) for using podcasts for instruction:

1.

Don't reinvent the wheel! If you can source podcasts which are applicable to your context and topics, make use of them. Remember to acknowledge the podcast creators!

2. If you create your own podcast, do the necessary research and keep it interesting, conversational and engaging.
3. Consider repurposing some of your lectures into podcasts. Create a blueprint and follow it accordingly.
4. As much as is possible, incorporate other media (text, videos, images) to create a wider "reach net" among your audience.
5. Create and assign authentic activities to your podcasts if they are an essential component of your classroom teaching.
6. Guide students (get help if necessary) in creating podcasts as alternative and/or authentic assessment.
