Interactive Videos

7) INTERACTIVE VIDEOS

What are they?

Interactives in education (images, videos, infographics, slides, etc.) are hands-on, exciting ways of engaging your learners with your content. Interactive videos (IV) are next level videos which are taking Higher Education by storm! Regular videos (aka standard videos, traditional videos or linear videos) facilitate minimum interaction - playing, pausing, rewinding, fast forwarding and stopping the video. Interactive videos (aka non-linear videos, gamified videos) combine traditional videos with interactive elements such as hotspots, time triggers, data input and branching. There are different types of interactive videos and for education, facilitators can employ the quizzes, make-your-own adventure versions. Interactive videos can be used on any type of device, are more engaging that standard videos, are more memorable, involve the learner more.

Tips (best practice) for using interactive videos for instruction:

1. Familiarise yourself with the basics of interactive videos. There are many sites and platforms that provide trial or free versions.
2.

Chunk your interactive learning videos. Because interactive videos offer increased engagement, there is the temptation for us to cover several topics or very long videos. In order to keep your learners focused, chunking or microlearning is recommended!

3. Ensure that your learning outcomes are clear, are reflected in the content and the activities you incorporate in your IV.
4. Include subtitles and captions to make your interactive videos not only engaging, but also accessible to all your learners.
5. Ensure that you include both lower order and higher order items to ensure that your learners go beyond mere recall and comprehension.
6. A best practice for interactive videos is to create an accompanying guide which may include transcripts, further reading and more activities.
7. Use the results to analyse students' performance and to determine how to proceed with the teaching and learning experiences.
