Sports: Important Sporting Bodies and Agencies

WADA was established in 1999 as an international independent agency composed and funded equally by the sport movement and governments of the world. Its key activities include scientific research, education, development of anti-doping capacities, and monitoring of the World Anti Doping Code (Code) – the document harmonizing anti-doping policies in all sports and all countries. WADA is a Swiss private law Foundation. Its seat is in Lausanne, Switzerland, and its headquarters are in Montreal, Canada.

This is an association governed by Swiss law founded in 1904 and based in Zurich. It has 209 member associations and its goal, enshrined in its Statutes, is the constant improvement of football. FIFA employs some 310 people from over 35 nations and is composed of a Congress (legislative body), Executive Committee (executive body), General Secretariat (administrative body) and committees (assisting the Executive Committee)

This is the global governing body for cricket and aims to use the sport to captivate and inspire people of every age, gender, background and ability while building bridges between continents, countries and communities.

Acting as a catalyst for collaboration between all parties of the Olympic family, from the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the International Sports Federations (IFs), the athletes, the Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs), to the TOP partners, broadcast partners and United Nations agencies, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) shepherds success through a wide range of programmes and projects. On this basis it ensures the regular celebration of the Olympic Games supports all affiliated member organizations of the Olympic Movement and strongly encourages, by appropriate means, the promotion of the Olympic values.

The International Netball Federation (INF) is the sole, internationally recognised, governing body for Netball, affiliated to the SportAccord (formerly known as General Association of International Sports Federations), the International World Games Association and the Association of Recognised Sports Federations, receiving funding from the International Olympic Committee.

The International Federation of Sports Medicine / Fédération Internationale de Médécine du Sport (FIMS) was established in 1928, shortly after the first of the modern Olympic Games was held. FIMS is a structured and well-organised association, strongly committed to the promotion of the study and development of sports medicine throughout the world. The purpose and administration of FIMS is clearly set out in its Statutes and By-Laws.

On the 17 July 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden, following the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in the Swedish capital, the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was founded as the world governing body for the sport of track and field Athletics. The IAAF was founded to fulfil the need for a world governing authority, for a competition programme, for standardised technical equipment and for a list of official World records. All of these requirements remain today.

The ITF administers and regulates the game through over 200 affiliated National Associations, together with six Regional Associations. The ITF is responsible for the Rules of Tennis, including the technical specifications for courts and equipment, and the running and enforcing of a joint anti-doping programme

FIBA, the world governing body for basketball, is an independent association formed by 213 National federations of basketball throughout the world. It is recognized as the sole competent authority in basketball by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). FIBA is a non-profit making organization and, in principle, does not pursue any objective of economic character for its own gains

FINA is the International Federation (IF) recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for administering international competition in Aquatics. It is one of several IFs which administer a given sport/discipline for the IOC and/or international community. FINA currently oversees competition in five aquatics sports: swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, water polo and open water swimming.
