Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT)® @ Mona: Previous Competitions


In 2021, the Library in collaboration with the Office of Graduate Studies and Research hosted the inaugural The UWI Mona Edition of the prestigious Three Minute Thesis 3MT® Competition. Six PhD students from the Faculties of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Humanities & Education participated in the UWI Mona Campus Edition. Faculties. 


The Three Minute Thesis 3MT® is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), in 2008 for Australian research students. Since its inception, the 3MT® concept has grown exponentially as a multi-national event held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide. Groups include South-East Asia and later North-East Asia as the Asia-Pacific 3MT® competition, the U21 network, and the Vitae UK.

The UWI, Mona Campus Edition

The University of the West Indies Mona Campus Edition begins with the Faculties selecting two representatives for Round One of the competition. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Faculties may use Zoom or any other suitable online platform to stage the competition. The Faculties that elect to host the competition in a face-to-face manner may do so while observing the COVID-19 protocols as stipulated by The University of the West Indies and the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW). Each participant will give a 3-minute pitch of his/her thesis.

The winners from Round One will then progress to Round Two which is The UWI Mona 3MT Competition Finals. This will be hosted virtually via the Zoom platform.

How to Enter?

Round One: Faculty Finals - May, 14, 2021 @ 11:00 pm

  • Students will apply to the Faculty through their departments
  • Faculties will select two students as representatives to compete.
  • Faculty nominations should be emailed to by Mid-day, May 13, 2021. Please include the following:  
      • Name of representatives
      • Title of the presentations
      • The Faculty
  • The Faculty representatives must be available to present in Round One which is the Faculty Finals.

Round Two: The UWI, Mona Campus Edition – May, 20, 2021

  • The winner from each Faculty from Round One will be invited to compete in Round Two (The UWI Mona Campus Edition)
  • The participants should send videos of their presentations to one week before the date of the finals. Specifications of the videos will be provided at a later date
  • On the day of the finals:
    • The moderator of the competition will talk briefly with individual participants before the (video) presentation.
    • The adjudicating team will watch the video and determine the winner based on the judging criteria.

1. Save your video as: FirstnameLastname-3MT-Category (Category refers to 1st round, second round or finals)
2. Upload your video to your  Google Drive account (If you do not have a Gmail account you may create one )
3. Share your video and enable “editor” permissions with

The dates below are for the UWI Mona Campus Participants. Please check your respective campuses for the most current dates. The UWI Finals will be the same date for all campuses.
