The Three Minute Thesis 3MT® is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), in 2008 for Australian research students. Since its inception, the 3MT® concept has grown exponentially as a multi-national event held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide. Groups include South-East Asia and later North-East Asia as the Asia-Pacific 3MT® competition, the U21 network, and the Vitae UK.
Active PhD candidates who have successfully passed their MPhil Upgrade Seminar (including candidates whose theses are under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible to participate in 3MT® competitions at all levels.
Doctoral researchers who have already done their PhD Oral Examination are not eligible to participate.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. The competition will challenge students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries, and explain them concisely and effectively in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.
