Faculties.

The Three Minute Thesis 3MT® is an academic competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), in 2008 for Australian research students. Since its inception, the 3MT® concept has grown exponentially as a multi-national event held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide. Groups include South-East Asia and later North-East Asia as the Asia-Pacific 3MT® competition, the U21 network, and the Vitae UK.

Who is eligible to compete?

Active PhD candidates who have successfully passed their MPhil Upgrade Seminar (including candidates whose theses are under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible to participate in 3MT® competitions at all levels.

Doctoral researchers who have already done their PhD Oral Examination are not eligible to participate.

The UWI 3MT® Competition Edition

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. The competition will challenge students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries, and explain them concisely and effectively in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

Benefits in Participating

In addition to monetary awards, this is an opportunity for The UWI graduate students to:

  • Demonstrate key attributes of the ideal UWI graduate.
  • Cultivate and improve their academic skills in research presentation, and effective communication.
  • Promote their research projects to a wider community.
  • Be exposed to diverse career opportunities and other postgraduate opportunities, such as research funding.

The University of the West Indies will expand its reach as a global university through regional/international networking.

In the first year (2020-2021) the competition will see the inauguration and launch of The UWI Mona Campus Edition.

In the second year (2021/2022), the competition will incorporate the other Campuses as The UWI Edition of the 3MT® Competition.

By the third year, the Competition will widen to include other universities in the Region as the English-speaking Caribbean Edition of the 3MT® Competition.
