Getting e-Books

The University of The West Indies, St. Augustine Campus has a large collection of eBooks made available through our databases, our eBook platforms  and UWIlinC (our online portal). These collections cover a variety of disciplines including engineering, food and agriculture, science and technology, humanities and education and social sciences, as well as a Caribbean Collection.

eBooks (or electronic books) are the same as printed books in an online environment.  They can be read on your personal computers, tablets and smart phones.

eBooks have become increasingly popular over the last decade, and offer great advantages

  • they are always accessible- 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the world
  • you can read them on your tablet/mobile device
  • you don't have to visit the library to view them
  • they are free to you
  • there is no fine penalty

The St. Augustine Campus acquires eBooks from several vendors.  While we do have a few eBook collections for which we pay an annual subscription, the majority of our eBooks are individual titles for which we have perpetual access rights (so we own them, rather than subscribe to them)..

Please note that not all eBooks are available for downloading or reading offline.  EBook access is governed by digital rights management (DRM) systems, which are used by vendors/publishers to prevent unauthorized reproduction of their books.  In addition to this, eBook availability can be restricted by user option models- single, three or multi-user options

In order to borrow or 'download' eBooks (those which can be borrowed), you would need to do the following:

  • create a personal user account
  • download  certain software to read these eBooks - more
  • download certain applications to access them via your mobile and other devices

You can also filter your searches in the UWIlinC portal to limit your search results to e-Books. Check out how to do this here, and then try it out for yourself.
