Honorary Graduands Introduction
HONORARY GRADUANDS CITATIONS
The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus in Jamaica confers honorary degrees to eminent members of society in acknowledgement of their sterling contributions. These graduands are recognized for their work across a number of fields including Literature, Culture, Business, Sport, Law, Science and Technology.
The Mona Library’s West Indies and Special Collections (WISC) holds almost 200 citations of the recipients of honorary degrees. Citations within the WISC collection were mostly conferred from the Mona Campus, but also features some of those honorary degrees issued from the other campuses across The UWI. This collection features citations for higher degrees offered as early as the 1960s through to 2021. The higher degrees offered are the Doctor of Laws (LLD), Doctor of Letters (DLitt) and Doctor of Science (DSc).
Among the recipients of honorary degrees within the collection are some world-famous individuals such as: Nelson Mandela, Michael Manley, Alan Emtage, Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, George Lamming and Cicely Williams.
The collection in the WISC is digitised and a select number of citations for these honorary graduands are featured throughout this LibGuide.
