Frequently Asked Questions

Returning Items

Library users are responsible for ensuring that all library materials are returned in good condition, that is, in the same condition as when the items were checked out. These procedures apply to UWI-owned library materials and to Inter-library Loan items borrowed from another library. Do not remove the paper jackets or other paper work from Inter-library Loan items.

On-Site Book Returns

Library materials (excluding devices) may also be returned to the following libraries:

  • Law Library
  • Science and Technology Library
  • Medical Library 

Library materials returned to the aforementioned Libraries will be forwarded to the Main Library. Items will be checked in based on the date of delivery to the Law, Medical, and Science and Technology Libraries.

Renewing Items 

RBC items may not be renewed nor reserved. An open shelf item may be renewed up to two consecutive times, provided that it has not been requested by another user, and is not overdue. Please note that the Library reserves the right to recall any item borrowed if it is in great demand (e.g. required course material).

These Items can only be used inside the Library: 

  • Reference Books
  • Newspaper
  • Thesis
  • West Indies & Special Collections
  • Government Serial / UN Collections Documents
  • World Bank's Caribbean Public Information Material 

NOTE

  • Reading Room/3-Hour loans are not to be taken out of the Library.
  • Reading room items taken out of the library will incur a fine of $1,000.00 and an additional $20.00 for each hour that the item is overdue.

Overdue Items

Once an item becomes overdue, fines accrue every day, including days when the library is closed 

Lost and Found Policy 

The Library operates a lost and found section at the Circulation Desk. All items not claimed by the end of the semester, will be disposed of in the following manner:

RBC OVERNIGHT LOAN

$50.00 PER DAY AFTER DUE DATE

RBC 3-HOUR LOAN  $20.00 PER HOUR
OPEN SHELF $10.00 PER DAY 

Borrowing rights may be suspended when total fine amount to one hundred dollars ($100.00). All library charges will be placed on your banner account and can be paid through RESU. 

Penalties may include withholding examination cards an deferral of the award of qualifications until fines have been paid.

NOTE: Maximum fines for very late return of library materials shall be at the discretion of the Campus Librarian.

The librarian is authorized to request the Bursar to charge the amount of unpaid fines to reader's account with the University
