Finding Items on the Shelf

When you look up a book in our catalog, you'll be given a "call number" for that book. Call numbers are on the spine labels like you see in the picture. This is how we keep the books in order on the shelf

Reserve Book Collection
The reserve collection is comprised of books and articles placed in the Reference Desk hold of the Library by faculty members to be accessed and used by students in their classes.

Open-Shelf Book Collection
The Open-Shelf collection is comprised of books and articles placed around the shelves in the Library by faculty members to be accessed and used by students in their classes.

These items can only be used inside the Library

  • Reference Books
  • Newspaper
  • Theses
  • West Indies & Special Collection
  • Government Serials / UN Collections Documents
  • World Bank's Caribbean Public Information material

Library of Congress Classification Outline

The Library of Congress Classification Outline tells you what subjects are found under each call number heading. For example, call numbers that start with "QC" are books about physics. Anything that starts with "K" is about Law.

You can also use this chart to see which call numbers are on certain floors at the library.
