This guide illustrates how to do citations and references in Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), 17th edition, Author-Date format.

About: Guide

This page provides resources to assist with citing and referencing sources in Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) 17th ed., author-date format.

For the purpose of this guide, the manual will be referred to as CMOS 17.

Recommended: Style & Edition

The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), author-date format, is referencing style which the UWI Thesis Guide states should be used by students in the following Faculties: Engineering, Food and Agriculture, Law (amongst other styles), Science and Technology (amongst other styles), and Social Sciences.

  • All new students (incoming AY 2024/2025) may use the latest edition, CMOS 18
  • If you are now starting to write your thesis, use CMOS 18.
  • Continuing students who have almost completed their thesis and are near submission may submit in CMOS 17.
  • If you are unsure which edition to use, kindly consult your Faculty Liaison Librarian for verification.

For AY 2024/2025, the STA Campus Libraries will continue to provide training and advice on CMOS 17, but will also offer guidance to students who have used CMOS 18 for their assignments, papers, projects, theses, casebooks, etc.

Please note that the guidance provided by the UWI Thesis Guide (formatting, layout) takes precedence over that offered by CMOS.
