The Mona Information Literacy Unit (MILU), was established in January 2001 as part of the University of the West Indies’ strategic push to produce distinctive UWI graduates. The competencies that a distinctive UWI graduate must demonstrate includes: the ability to demonstrate that he/she is a critical and creative thinker; as well as that he/she is information literate (“The UWI Distinctive Graduate”). The Mona Information Unit therefore aims to help students become critical thinkers and lifelong learners. In doing so it collaborates with faculties, librarians and administrators to develop and deliver training programmes that empower students to among other things:
♦ Locate academic/scholarly resources efficiently ♦ Improve the quality of academic assignments
♦ Acquire/improve research skills ♦ Reference work correctly to avoid plagiarism
